“With four generations of oilmen in the family, the Fairbanks represent the world’s longest oil producing family,” says Oil Museum of Canada supervisor Connie Bell. “Fairbank Oil has been supplying Imperial Oil in Sarnia with crude for 125 years.” Charles Fairbank III is the current Fairbank who has taken on the task started by great grandfather John Henry Fairbank continuing to produce oil using the same jerker line method J.H. Fairbank invented. “Charlie” as he is known has spent and continues to spend his time and money to not only preserve his family heritage at Fairbank Oil Properties but to protect Lambton County’s oil heritage in order to share it with future generations. In 2008 Ontario Lieutenant Governor David Onley honoured him with the Ontario Heritage Award for Lifetime Achievement for his efforts. Charlie is not alone in his endeavours to preserve and share the oil heritage of Lambton County. Patricia McGee, Charlie’s wife, has written extensively on the history of the Fairbank Company and surrounding landscape that comprises the Oil Heritage District. The story of Fairbank Oil is not over yet and since the 150 th Anniversary of the First Commercial Oil Well in North America occurred in 2008, the spotlight has been shone even brighter on this unusual company and family. Many articles have highlighted the Fairbank’s unique situation and it will be interesting to see where in the future this journey leads.
